Visit the Art & The Art and Antiques Gallery, located in the old J. C. Penney building, 207 West Main Street, has been open to the public since November, 2001. This building formerly housed the Museum of the Barrens, now called the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center.
When the Cultural Center moved to their new facility, the
Museum Board wanted to do something with the empty
building that would add to the downtown area, but at the
same time bring income back to the museum they could
use for exhibits. A committee was formed consisting of
Brenda Pook, Jamie Doty, Kristen Bale, Sandra Travis
and Sheila Oliver. They felt Glasgow needed an Art
Gallery. The Art Gallery would allow local artists to
display their art at no charge until they sold a painting. If
a painting is sold, 20% of the price goes toward the
museum. Since the building was so large, an antique
mall was planned for the other side, to bring in more
revenue. The mall rents space to dealers for $50.00 per
month, and 10% of their sales each month goes to the
museum. The mall also takes consignment antique
furniture and when sold 20% of that goes to the
museum.
Renaissance appropriated the money to the Cultural
Center to remodel the front of the building. It's so
amazing what a little paint and imagination will do.
Deana Snow is the manager of the Art & Antiques
Gallery, anyone else you find working there is a
volunteer. If you like working with antiques or art, new
volunteers are always welcome and always needed.
If you haven't been in, you should. It's a great place to visit
and at the same time support the Cultural
Center. The art hung in the gallery shows what talent
we have in the Barrens and if you like to browse
Antique Malls, ours is one to be proud of.
Our hours are
Monday though Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
- 4:30 p.m. Central Time.
