W. A. Weldon Open Tennis
Tournament The W. A. Weldon Open Tennis Tournament is one of the oldest
privately endowed tennis events in the South. The late Dr. Weldon, well-known
ear, nose and throat specialist in Glasgow, built the first tennis courts here
and held the first of these tournaments, under the name of the Weldon
Springdale Tennis Tournament, in 1928. Except for a period during WWII, the
tournament has continued annually and has drawn some of the finest players in
the South. Dr. & Mrs. Weldon have both passed on, but each provided in a
material way for the perpetual continuation of this great event. The Glasgow
Recreation Department is in charge of the tournament, working with the Weldon
Tennis Association and Committee, all of whom are loyal supporters of tennis
and the Weldon Open Tennis Tournament.
Jim Moody Doubles
Classic The Jim Moody Doubles Classic is the doubles division of the
Weldon Open. Jim Moody was chairman of the Weldon Tennis Committee, an avid
tennis player who was a masterful doubles partner, and known throughout our
area as the premier sports announcer and newsman for WCLU radio. Jim, who loved
to call people Legend, became himself a Legend in Glasgow, loved by all who
knew him. WCLU radio and Royse Broadcasting proudly sponsors this division of
the W. A. Weldon Open in honor and memory of one of the true Legends of our
city. Jim Moody loved this City of Glasgow, loved tennis, loved his family,
loved his work, and loved people. His tireless energy and enthusiasm will be
forever missed.
