Darrell G. Pickett
On behalf of the City of Glasgow welcome to our world wide web site. Situated in south central Kentucky, Glasgow is the county seat of Barren County with a population of approximately 15,000. Our city takes great pride in its Scottish heritage, its rich history and pride of community.

Glasgow has been fortunate over the past decade to have enjoyed a good economy, steady business and industrial growth, and most recently work on revitalization of our downtown through the Glasgow Renaissance/Main Street Program.

As Mayor of Glasgow I would describe our city and its citizens as very caring and giving. We invite you to visit Glasgow, tour our city and talk with our citizens.

We hope that you will enjoy your stay here and that you will want to come back again.

City Hall is always open to our visitors. We invite you to come by and find out what Glasgow is all about - a city that takes pride in its history and works hard for our future. Below is just a brief outline about our city, its services and programs. Come by, give us a call, I think you will find, as many other people have here that Glasgow is a small community, with a big heart.

Excellent Education SystemEducation:   Our community offers an excellent educational system, with award winning schools in both Glasgow and Barren County, recognized as among the best in the state. We are home to the new Glasgow Regional Center, which houses the Glasgow campus of Western Kentucky University. The Glasgow campus offers both four-year and two-year degrees, with a wide range of classes for both traditional and non-traditional students.

Industry in our areaIndustry:   There are two industrial parks in Glasgow and a third under development. Glasgow has been fortunate in recent years to have enjoyed a low unemployment rate, serving as a business and industrial hub for communities to the north, east and south.

Utilities:   In recent years Glasgow has been given the title as 'the most wired small town in America', Glasgow has become known around the world as the epicenter of municipally owned telecommunication projects. Far ahead of other communities, Glasgow started building its fiber optic based broadband network in 1988.Glasgow Electric Plant BoardThis municipally owned and operated network delivers cable television, high speed Internet access and other networking services to all citizens of Glasgow and much of the surrounding county. By operating a network as a municipal utility, Glasgow's citizens enjoy the lowest rates for cable television and high speed Internet access available anywhere.
Glasgow Water Company
The Glasgow Water Company is a municipally owned water and sewer utility working daily to provide the very best quality drinking water and sewer collection at the lowest possible price.

Services:   Our city offers its citizens a wide variety of services and programs. We take great pride in having some of the best police, fire and ambulance services in the state, as well as a state-of-the-art enhanced 911 system. In September 1993, the City of Glasgow opened one of the first duel synthetic-lined landfills in the state of Kentucky. The Glasgow Regional Landfill accepts over 70,000 tons of waste annually and is permitted to serve the disposal need of fourteen (14) counties in south central Kentucky. The Solid Waste Division of the Department of Public Works is responsible for the collection and disposal of residential solid waste and recyclable materials in the City of Glasgow. Curbside collection of solid waste and recyclable items is provided by this division using City owned vehicles. Glasgow offers its residents the most convenient way of recycling; curbside recycling.

Recreation:   Glasgow operates five parks and a municipal swimming pool, along with numerous recreational programs. A $1.6 million YMCA facility offers a wide variety of activities, including an indoor swimming pool and walking track. We are within a short drive to Barren River State Park and Mammoth Cave National Park. Local recreational facilities include a private golf and country club, four public golf courses, three swimming pools, bowling and a eight-screen cinema complex. Each year our community hosts a number of festivals and events including the Glasgow Highland Games, Global Fest and wide array of outdoor music festivals. We invite you to visit Glasgow, tour our city and talk with our citizens. We hope that you will enjoy your stay here and that you will want to come back again.
