Firefighters are needed to respond to alarms as soon as
possible, in a safe and orderly fashion. When a new person is
hired they are put through in-house training at the Glasgow Fire
Department. During the training, these new firefighters are
drilled on how fast that can get into their gear and ready to
fight fire. An officer announcing “2 minutes” calls these
drills! At this time the firefighter drops (or rises) from
whatever is being performed and gets to their gear as quickly as
possible, without injuring themselves or anyone else in the
process.
The following is a step by step of the process of a 2 Minute drill:
| 1. | Slip off the station boots and get into the bunkers and FF boots. |
| 2. | At about the same time put the Nomex hood on. |
| 3. | Pull the bunkers up and fasten into place. |
| 4. | Put the turnout coat on, zip and fasten. |
| 5. | Push the Nomex hood down and around your neck (this is prep for the mask placement later). |
| 6. | Put on the SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) and fasten into place. |
| 7. | Put mask on and cinch straps. |
| Pull Nomex hood up and over and seal off any flesh from external elements. | |
| 8. | Put on helmet and gloves. |
| 9. | Turn on air bottle, connect regulator and take first breath. |
To date, the fastest time held is (unofficially) by FF Adam Maulden at 55 seconds. FF David Karrick is here in the video
conducting a 2 minute drill for the purpose of demonstration, so he is going a little slower than normal.
